National Stationery Week kicks off on Monday 31st March in celebration of all things stationery.

It’s also a week to encourage Britain to get writing with this year’s focus on encouraging kids around the UK to pick up their pens and practice their handwriting.

Stationery is still holding it’s own in this technological age and there doesn’t seem to be any indication that this will change in the foreseeable future.  In fact, technology has helped people to appreciate stationery even more!

There will be lots of retailers offering discounts on lots of stationery items during the week, so it will be a perfect time for you to stock up on all of your favourite stationery items.

Diary Notes Newsletter – 9th March 2014

Hi Everyone and a warm welcome to our new readers. We hope you have all had a happy, healthy and productive 2 weeks.

We mentioned in our last Newsletter the need to use a Food Diary if you wanted to succeed in eating healthier or to try to lose a few pounds. In this Newsletter, we therefore wanted to mention the benefits of incorporating some form of exercise at least 3 times a week to help you stay healthy or to shed any excess weight. Your Food Diary and exercise therefore go hand-in-hand and will definitely guarantee you achieve your goal this year.

One great way to stay healthy or shed weight successfully is to take 10,000 steps a day. Below is an article on the importance of taking 10,000 steps and how a pedometer can really help you achieve this.

The Importance of 10,000 Steps

pedometerWhen trying to lose weight, every tool you can find makes the experience much easier and more effective. There are many tips that you can start using that will get you on the right path to taking off weight effortlessly. No one wants to be consumed with his or her diet, so the first tip is to buy a diary and start jotting down what exercises or keep fit classes you will attend for the following week. Once it is down in black and white you tend to be more motivated to complete those workouts.

Along with choosing healthier foods, a really good way to get your body used to moving is to make 10,000 steps your goal everyday, especially if you are not a keep fit enthusiast. By counting your steps, you get a workout without having to go to the gym. A definite plus as it will allow you more free time to do the things you really want to do. By taking 10,000 steps a day you will build stamina, burn excess calories and maintain a healthy heart

Use the Planner to Guide Your Progress

It is documented that walking is an excellent exercise that helps in a weight loss plan, so by taking 10,000 steps a day you will find you effortlessly lose weight. The average person takes between 3,000-4,000 steps a day and 1,000 steps is equivalent to 10 minutes of brisk walking. A good practice is to jot down your steps into your diary to see where you’ve achieved your steps or where you will need to improve. Your diary will become your best friend, and you will have documented how the weight came off consistently and effortlessly. This will also motivate you to keep going. In order to count your steps, you will need a pedometer, which is a small device that can be hooked to a belt and counts every step that you take. You can buy a pedometer for as little as £5.00. Every night before going to bed, simply jot down the number of steps on the pedometer into your diary. Now that Spring is just around the corner, it will be the perfect time to get outside.

Changing habits takes some time and effort so be realistic in your approach to how many steps you can initially achieve. Start with tracking how many steps you take in a normal day then use your total weekly number to work out a daily average. Use the daily average to build your steps gradually until you are taking 10,000 steps a day. You will be surprised at how many steps you do take during the day and knowing this may motivate you to find more ways of increasing the amount of steps you take.

Here are 5 tips to help you achieve 10,000 steps everyday:

– When you go to the supermarket, park your car as far away from the entrance as possible.
– Leave your car at home and walk to any appointments or visits to family or friends.
– If you are in a building that has a lift, take the stairs instead.
– Get off the bus or train a stop early and walk the rest of the way home or to work.
– While the commercials are playing on the TV, get up and do some steps – it all adds up!

One of the oldest Diaries in the world

Can you guess how far back Diaries have been in use?

Well you maybe surprised to hear a Diary dating back to 2528 BC in the reign of the 4th Dynasty King Khufu, or Orcheops, builder of the Great Pyramid of Giza was found close to the Red sea.

The fragments of the diary (papyri), the oldest ever found in Egypt, is written by Merrer, an old kingdom official involved in the building of the great pyramid.  Though actual details of the pyramid’s construction are scarce, the journal provides a precise account for every working day.

It just goes to show, that even back then, a diary was crucial in getting those important jobs done!

Welcome to the very first My Secret Friend Newsletter – Diary Notes. We hope you enjoy our very first edition.

We really want Diary Notes to be your Newsletter, to act as a support for you, in providing tips, suggestions, inspiration and encouragement. Your new 2014 diary is important to you and this year, we want you to get the most out of it so you can achieve all those goals you have set.

Our beautiful Ladies Diary comes with 3 Sections, a Me Section, Keep Fit & Food Section and Finance Section and one of our other aims, for this Newsletter, will be to help you use each page as effectively as you can. We will therefore feature practical monthly articles on how to achieve this.

With this in mind, we thought our very first article should be on a huge major topic that affects us all, food and diet. The top New Year resolution for most people is to either lose weight or eat more healthily. Our western diet is affecting our weight and health and everyone is becoming aware of the need to make changes. If your resolution is to start eating healthier or to lose a few pounds then the best place to start is to initially keep a Food Diary. It sounds boring, we know, but once you commit to starting one, it really does allow you to see what you really eat and drink each day. It then becomes much easier to make small gradual changes to your diet without it becoming an uphill struggle.

We want you to make the best possible start with your Food Diary so here are 4 tips to get you started.

Four Tips for Your Food Diary

Food DiaryA lifestyle women’s diary is a great asset to any busy woman, since a 3-in-1 diary allows you to keep track of so many important things. Keeping track of the food you eat is especially important if you want to nourish your body the way you ought to. Here are some tips for getting the most out of the food diary portion of your journal.

Track Your Water
Did you know that your body is at least half water? Water is essential to all of your body’s processes including building muscle, removing waste, and digesting food. Keep track of the amount of water you drink each day. Staying hydrated is essential.

Avoid Useless Calories
Sure those crisps and chocolate bar fit right within your calorie restriction, but is this meal really giving your body what it needs? Calories are units of fuel for the body, and they should come from nutritious sources. Your diet should consist of mostly complex carbohydrates, lean proteins, and healthy vegetable fats. Save the snacks for occasional treats.

Plan Ahead
As the old adage goes, when you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Create meal plans for yourself at least a few days ahead of time. This makes it less likely that you will give in to unhealthy foods once your stomach starts rumbling. If you’re very ambitious, try preparing your meals ahead of time. This weekend activity will ensure that you’re prepared for the week ahead.

Exercise
We know, we know. You’re too busy, you’re tired, you have the kids today, or you just don’t like exercise. It’s understandable why so many women fail to get enough physical activity. However, you must remember that the human body was made to move. When you don’t move, the body stores excess calories as fat just in case you go into starvation mode later. If starvation is unlikely for you, then you have to get rid of that fat another way. You can do so by eating fewer calories. You can increase your calorie deficit by adding in activities like walking, biking, and swimming.

Exercise also helps you to build muscle, which helps to burn even more fat.

It is indeed a challenge to go from passive to actively healthy with your eating habits, but its well worth undertaking. Use your food planner as a tool to keep you on the right track.

Tropical Green Smoothie1 1/2 cups water
1 head organic romaine lettuce, chopped
3-4 stalks organic celery
1/2 head of a large bunch or 3/4 of a small bunch of spinach
1 organic apple, cored and chopped
1 organic pear, cored and chopped
1 organic banana
Juice of 1/2 fresh organic lemon
Optional 1/3 bunch organic cilantro (stems OK) and 1/3 bunch organic parsley (stems OK)

Directions

Made up of about 70 percent green vegetables and 30 percent fruit, this smoothie helps you eat far more greens than you ordinarily could. Because we blend the greens and fruit for easy digestion, your body is able to absorb more of the vitamins and minerals without working so hard. Thanks to all its nutrients and fiber, the smoothie is incredibly filling, so it keeps you from reaching for that mid-morning second cup of coffee and that bagel you really didn’t want to eat.

1. Add water and chopped head of romaine to blender. Blend at a low speed until smooth.
2. Add spinach, celery, apple and pear and blend at high speed.
3. Add cilantro and parsley (which help chelate heavy metals out of your body)
4. Finish with banana and lemon
